Understanding the Inner Critic
Hello everyone and welcome to Mentoring with Geraldine and the Bite-sized podcast. How the devil are you? Last time, we delved into what might be holding you back, whether it’s your comfort zone or staying within it. This time, I want to talk to you about quieting that inner critic and understanding its impact on your professional and personal life.
We all have an inner critic. It’s that persistent voice that questions our abilities and decisions. To cultivate self-compassion and care for ourselves, we must first understand what’s holding us back. Often, it’s our inner critic. This inner voice stems from various life experiences, shaping our beliefs and behaviours over time.
Addressing the Inner Critic
For ourselves, it’s not always possible to seek external support immediately. Life gets busy, and we might not have the time to visit a therapist or a mentor. However, recognising and addressing our inner critic in the moment can make a significant difference. By becoming aware of this inner voice, we can begin to challenge its validity and reduce its power over us.
When you’re procrastinating, it’s often due to feeling overwhelmed rather than the inner critic. Procrastination can stem from not knowing where to start. Breaking down tasks into manageable steps can alleviate this feeling. However, if you’ve completed a task but haven’t shared it with the world, that’s likely your inner critic saying it’s not good enough. Recognising this distinction is crucial in addressing the underlying issue.
Trusting Your Clients’ Judgement
When it comes to your clients, avoid projecting your inner critic’s doubts onto them. Just because you might question the value of your services doesn’t mean they do. Clients seek your help because they believe in your expertise. They are willing to invest in their well-being. Trust in their judgement and in your ability to help them.
Take a deep breath and ask yourself, what am I projecting out there right now? What should I stop projecting to help my clients achieve their goals and for me to achieve mine? Reflect on these questions, journal your thoughts, and give yourself the compassion you deserve.
